The Queensland Wet Tropics encompasses two distinct geographical areas. For the purposes of Grow Me Instead, it begins just south of Mackay and runs north to Proserpine. It also includes the area from Ingham through to Cairns, as well as parts of the Atherton Tablelands and Cape York. The region is typically wetter than the nearby Dry Tropics most of the year, yet can be subjected to distinct dry periods; the area is home to an interesting and diverse flora. It is important to remember that an invasive plant in the neighbouring Dry Tropics may not be invasive in such a generally moist climate. It is prudent to seek sound local advice before making plant selection.
The Wet Tropics is home to many significant national parks and world heritage areas. It is of paramount importance that sound plant advice is sought before planting adjacent to these sensitive areas. Consideration must be given to appropriate plant choice as birds and other animals can distribute seeds into nearby bush-land and rainforest fringes causing immeasurable destruction of natural habitat.
